Future Indefinite Tense

Introduction

The future indefinite tense denote actions or events that has not happened yet and is expected to happen in the future.

‘Shall’ or ‘will’ is the helping verb that is compulsorily used in sentences to highlight future actions.

Structure of the Future Indefinite Tense

Subject + Auxiliary verb(will) + Base form of the main verb + the rest of the sentence

Application of the Future Indefinite Tense

The  future indefinite tense is majorly used in five scenarios. In the table below, each scenario is mentioned well with an example:

Key points to remember in future indefinite tense

  • Every type of statement has two mandatory things i.e. will + base form of the verb.
  • “Will” is used for assumptions, predictions, on-spot decisions, promises, and future actions.
  • “Shall” is majorly used while making formal suggestions or offers.
  • “Going to” is used to denote planned actions and conversational statements.
  • To state timings, time expressions like tomorrow, next week, etc. are often used.
  • Won’t can be an alternative of “will not” to make negative sentences.

Commonly made mistakes in the future indefinite tense –

Below are a few commonly made mistakes that are made in future indefinite tense: 

1. To highlight future action, use present tense instead of future tense

For Example:

A. I make dinner for the guests tonight. (Incorrect)

B. I will make dinner for the guests tonight. (Correct)

2. Missing “will/shall” from the sentence

For Example:

A. She travel to Jaipur next week. (Incorrect)

B. She will travel to Jaipur  next week. (Correct)

3. Confused between future continuous and simple future:

For Example:

A. I will be going to work. (Incorrect)

B. I will go to work. (Correct)

4. Using “Will” and “Going to” in the same sentence:

For Example:

A. I will going to buy vegetables. (Incorrect)

B. I will buy vegetables. (Correct)

5. Wrong use of “will” in Negative Sentences:

B. I won’t come. (Correct)
